To understand the question, 'What is reading?' We have to understand the changing face of literacy and the dynamic nature of the term ‘text’. Reading is no longer just about making meaning through the medium of the printed word. As technology and society changes, so too does our definition of literacy. Today reading involves making meanings with texts that use a range of systems and multiple modes of communication (listening, reading, speaking, viewing and writing).
Reading therefore refers to all ways of gaining meaning from texts, including non-print texts. This can include
reading print such as books, magazines, posters and charts, as well as
viewing visual texts such as films, videos, webpages, photographs and graphic materials.
